White Bread and Grebbel
As an adult, my father refused to eat anything but WHITE bread. He associated dark bread (whole wheat, etc) with being poor. It bothered him terribly that he grew up very poor, although it did not bother his two sisters. He associated white bread with people who were middle/upper class. He would only eat plain white Wonderbread type bread (this was in Portland, Oregon). I wonder if anyone else had similar experiences with a parent or grandparent?
My Grossmutter pronounced the "Grebbels" as "Kreppels" with a K. She rolled out dough, cut each piece and twisted one part inside another I think (can't remember it's so long ago!). She deep fried them and then sprinkled them with sugar. They were delicious! They were a favorite at Christmas. She also made wonderful homemade noodles and when I became an adult living on my own she would give me a sack of dry noodles every time she saw me. They were sooo good! I tried to get her recipe but it was a handful of this and that. When I tried making noodles once they were fragile and broke into bits and pieces.
