Daughter Colonies

Due to population growth and lack of suitable farm land, new villages called daughter colonies were established from the late 1840s through the 1860s. Families from Norka helped establish the following daughter colonies:

Neu-Norka - Founded in 1852 by colonists from Norka. All of the 88 households listed in the 1857 Census of Neu-Norka are shown as residents of Norka (Alt-Norka) during the 1850 census.

Brunnental - was first founded in 1855 by colonists from the mother colonies of Frank, Kolb, Walter, Anton Kukkus, Dinkel and Norka.

The 1857 Census of Brunnental shows 15 households that originated in Norka.

Sue Hopp Nakaji has created an Excel spreadsheet showing family names from various sources, including: Kulberg lists, Volga transport lists, 1798, 1816, 1834, 1850, 1857 census's, Volgograd records to 1845, and Hussenbach database. Many of the families show connections to Norka.

Marienfeld (Spatzenchutor) - Founded in 1852 by colonists from Kamenka and Norka.

The founding of the daughter colonies allowed for continued growth and prosperity in Norka and Neu-Norka, but in less than twenty years, the privileges granted to them by Catherine's Manifesto would begin to be taken away.
