Dutch Hop Music

Volga German musicians in Kansas

The term Dutch Hop refers to a type of dance and style of music that was brought to the United States by the Volga Germans.

Until World War II, there were gatherings for German dances and wedding (Hochzeit) dances in many communties. Due to anti-German sentiment caused by the World Wars, these dances were renamed Dutch hops, and the new name stuck.

Two well known Dutch Hop artists in the United States are Adolph Lesser and Paul Weingardt. Both of these artists played with musicians who had come directly from Russia passing along the songs of their ancestors.  Adolph Lesser was born in 1915 in Loveland, Colorado to a family that had emigrated from the colony of Frank. The Weingardt family emigrated from the colony of Rommel.
