The Volga Germans included industrialists who were prominent in the region. The Schmidt, Reineke and Borel families were among the most prominent.

Former German mill in Saratov. Built in the 1880s, it continues to be used.


Postcard of a Volga German steam sawmill for the manufacture of wood products. The mill was owned by the brothers K., E. and F. Bauer of Sarepta, Saratov.

Remains of the Hergert mill in Volgograd (Stalingrad). This stands as part of the memorial to the battle of Stalingrad during WWII.
